How to Prepare for a Kayaking Tour
Going on your first kayaking tour can be both an exciting and nerve-wracking experience. You may have had practice where you are, but you don’t know what could happen in new waters for multiple days. Kayaking for pleasure vs going on an actual multi day trip are two completely different things and come with their specific challenges. This is why it is very important you know exactly what to expect, and have the right gear as well. Here’s how to prepare for a kayaking tour the right way.
Get Intel
The first thing you have to do is research the area, as well as the best time of the year to go. You should consider things like wind, daylight hours, nighttime and daytime temperatures, and hurricane season among other things.
You want to go somewhere where the temperature is as stable as possible. This could be different times of the year depending on the location. Some locations near the Equator and places like New Zealand and Australia have sunny, yet comfortable temperatures all year. Artic locations have lots of daylight and a stable temperature during the summer months. Destinations like Israel, however, might be too hot in the summer, but perfect in fall. So, make sure that you understand the climate and micro climates for any place you’re intending to go.
Have Your Essentials
You’ll now have to start on survival equipment. You will need at least an L.E.D. flashlight, a knife, a first aid kit, hand sanitizer (to clean your hands before eating), disinfecting wipes, and a multi-use tool. Make sure that everything is in a nice water tight container. You should also make sure that the container is stored within your reach. Your front bungees could be a good option.
You should also create a packing list with essentials and a few small comfort items. Some people like to bring some treats with them, like gummy bears or chocolate. These could sometimes be just as important as major items.
Have the Right Gear for the Destination
You also have to have the right gear depending on the destination. If you’re going on white water, then you will need a proper drysuit. Drysuits keep a thin layer of air right under the suit to serve as a protection against moisture and acts as insulation as well. You want something that is breathable, fits well, and is easy to get in and out of. You also want to make sure that it has enough pockets, loops, a good warranty and the material is reflective.
You have to consider materials when choosing a drysuit as well. A neoprene suit is a good option if you’re looking for something that is durable, easy to repair, but a bit bulkier. Laminated and tri laminated suits are better if you’re looking for something lighter, though they are less buoyant than neoprene suits. Vulcanized rubber/nylon suits are very durable and are what most hazmat suits are made of. They’re very durable and are right between neoprene and tri laminated/laminated suits in terms of bulkiness.
Prepare Your Body for the Trip
Paddling for a day and going back home is very different from doing for consecutive days. So, make sure that you get in shape before you leave. This means embarking on strength and endurance rowing exercise routine while charging up on healthy carbs, proteins, and fats for at least a month before going.
These are just some of the steps that will allow you to prepare for your next kayaking tour. Make sure that you’re well aware of your surroundings, and make sure that you have the equipment needed to have a safe and fun experience.
