The Aphaia Temple
The ancient Temple of Aphaia* is a special place. It stands in a beautiful spot above the pine forests in the hills of Aegina, with fabulous views across the Saronic Gulf. Imagine yourself there 2500 years ago when the surviving temple was built, or among the first known worshippers another thousand years before that.
Agios Nektarios | church & monastery
One of the most visited sites on Aegina is the church of miracle healer Agios Nektarios (Saint Nectarios) and the monastery of Agia Triada (The Holy Trinity) that is located on a higher level overlooking the church. Agios Nektarios of Aegina (1846-1920), is one of the most widely known Greek Orthodox Saints.
Paleachora
Aegina's Medieval Village - On a steep hill adjacent to the church and monastery of Agios Nektarios is located Aegina's version of Mystras - Paleachora, which means literally, "Old Town", and which was for a millennium (9th century - early 19th century AD) the island capital. The setting itself is magnificent, especially in spring.
Hill of Kolona with museum
The archeological site of Kolona. Just north of Aegina town is the hill with one single column (kolona in Greek), last remnant of a Doric Temple of Apollo, which was torn down with others - because they were deemed idolatrous - in the 4th century AD. Built in 520 BC of the porous Aegina sandstone, it stood on the site of previous temples on the prehistoric acropolis.
