The villages and areas of Aegina island
The island of Aegina covers a surface of 87.41 km2. Although relatively small, it’s offering different kinds of landscapes. A big dense pine forest covered area at the north east, middle and west side of the island. 3 Wedlands: one in Marathonas, one in Vagia and one in the area of Vlychada at the east side of the island. Bare mountains you will find in the west, middle and south part containing various hiking paths. The lower parts of the island are full of pistachio trees growing the famous Aegina “Fistikia”. Olive trees you will find all around the island. The most special area with huge very old trees is to be found in a flat area in the mountain above Marathonas below Mount Oros. It can reached by foot from Marathonas, Aeginitissa, Pachia Rachi or Sfentouri. You will find lots of Almond trees in the area of Kontos, home of Agios Nektarios and Paleachora. Beaches and spots where it possible to swim you will find all around the island.
Aegina island is the second largest island (Argo) Saronic island. The other major Saronic islands are: Salamina, Hydra, Poros, Spetses, Dokos & Agistri. Aegina island also belongs to “Islands“, which is one of the 8 units of the periphery Attika. Aegina is well connected with Agistri by a regular boat connection. There is also a boat connection with Poros but less frequently. In summer 2019, there was also a direct Hydrofoil connection with Hydra from Agia Marina.
The municipality of Aegina island is subdivided into the following five communities: Aegina town (7253*), Kipseli (2124*), Mesagros (1361*), Perdika (823*) & Vathi (1495*). These communities include the villages and areas listed at this page.
Almost all the villages are inhabited and connected by a concrete road and easily accessible by car or motor bike. Each village has its own character.
The population of the island, normally around 13.056 (Elstat) in wintertime, but can double in the month of August. During this period a lot of Athenians are spending the holiday in their privately owned holiday homes on the island. A lot of their houses are only occupied during the weekends, at Easter time and the month of August.
If you are looking for a place to stay for your holiday / vacation, accommodation can be found all over the island. Especially since AirBnb joined the tourism market. Still the biggest holiday village on the island is Agia Marina. With her wide sandy Blue Flag beach with shallow waters, Agia Marina is offering a wide range of accommodation. The village is lively in June, July and it can be very busy in August, like the rest of the island. I highly recommend to visit the island too in the less busy months when the weather is not so warm and it’s possible to explore the island by foot. You will really feel that you’ve landed in paradise.
In Aegina town is the biggest community on the island. All year through Ferries & Flying Dolphins are connecting Pireaus with the main port in Aegina town. The port of Aegina is a populair sailors destination. Unlike most of the other villages on the island, Aegina town is lively all year through. There are restaurants, cafeteria’s, bars, shops, car & motor bike rentals, cinemas (3 summer and 1 winter cinema) a post office & various banks with ATM’s. Aegina town is a perfect base for your discovery of the island, particularly in the off season months when the weather is not too hot.
Enjoy your wandering around the fishing villages, inland villages, mountain villages and all the areas in between.
